Favorite Purchases And Experiences In 2025
I think I've shared here before that I maintain a very detailed spreadsheet of our spending. It serves two purposes - it forces mindfulness in that I have to revisit every single purchase as I log it onto the spreadsheet. If I experience a fleeting sense of annoyance during the process, that's a good sign that the expenditure I'm entering was not made from mindfulness.
And secondly, it allows me to revisit our year and revisit our choices on where we put our money. So far I've only come across one somewhat irritating entry, which I'll list at the bottom of this post. Nicely, the majority delivered a lot of satisfaction or pleasure, both in the moment and in the afterwards.
Some of my favorite 2025 purchases:
- My new hybrid SUV. Such great gas mileage at 41+ mpg so far, so reliable, and so much fun to drive along the coastal highway that I live adjacent to, ideally with the sun roof open and my arm extended.
- My new wardrobe of pants, the result of losing 25 pounds this year. Additionally, I've purchased a few pair that were $100+ each, because they look that good, and this is the first time in my life that clothes shopping has been wholly fun and easy. 😀
- Our front row seats to watch the American Ballet Theatre perform Swan Lake. Even all these months later (we saw it in June), the beauty, excitement and energy we experienced is still lodged in my brain.
I likewise keep a very detailed calendar, and likewise enjoy going back over it at year's end to remind myself of how I chose to spend my time.
Some of my favorite 2025 experiences:
- Joining a women's club and getting involved with both the women and the various charities we support.
- Becoming more heavily involved at the library where I volunteer, and becoming appointed to it's Board.
- Losing and keeping off 25 pounds. This has been life altering in that I have also laid down a lifetime of negative messaging that I had become immersed in.
- Joining a social club with my husband. Even after just a couple of months we have made a number of connections and the club's water view restaurant is a lovely and comfortable place to enjoy and hang out at. No pressure, ever, to buy more drinks or food, or to pay our bill and move along. We can simply sit and enjoy for as long as we care to, including the lovely and prolonged sunsets.

I don't keep meticulous records, but a general awareness as I close each month of spending. My annoyance spend was having to buy a second set of play tickets to take my MIL after she booked something over a date I had previously cleared with her. I didn't waste the first tickets, but it was still an added extra expense without adding much enjoyment as the first even felt like a chore to attend.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure why I get so much enjoyment out of my detailed tracking, but I really do, which is why I keep it up. There are many ways to track spending, no question.
DeleteWith regard to your situation, the way you ended your sentence is significant. Going forward, perhaps select something that you will likewise enjoy?
What a lovely outcome to only have one expense that didn't feel worth it. I too track our spending by category and enjoy the process.
ReplyDeleteI think it's the result of being 15 years into our retirement - we have worked through the things that no longer serve us, and zeroed in on what brings us satisfaction at this point in our lives.
DeleteHappy 2026 Juhli!
Too have only one regret over a whole year is pretty good going! I don't keep an annual expenditure diary but think that maybe I should, it would be interesting to read later in the year. Hope that 2026 is a good year for you!
ReplyDeleteI think one of my biggest influences was watching a few seasons of a show about hoarders - all that stuff cluttering up peoples lives in a negative way had a really big impact on my own decision making about what to allow into our home. And that then spilled over into what spending experiences I was willing to allow into our lives as well.
DeleteI just realized there was one more regret - I bought tickets to what I thought was a live Dolly Parton tribute, but which turned out to be a pre-recorded Dolly on video accompanied by our local live symphony.
The tickets weren't terribly expensive, at just $70 each - which should have been a clue! Dolly, live, front row for $70? Yeah, don't think so! 😅
Congratulations on the weight loss! I don't keep a spread sheet of my spending other than in my head. But I've always been very responsible in handling of money. I did, however, start a spread sheet today for my health which I hope to rein in this year. Your last year's weight loss in my 2006 goal. So happy I stumbled on your post this morning to read about it.
ReplyDeleteHello and welcome!
DeleteThe hardest part of the weight loss is, of course, changing eating patterns and habits. The second hardest part (!) is understanding and accepting that the weight loss patterns and habits need to become the weight loss maintenance patterns and habits as well. It's both fascinating and depressing to realize how easy it is for me to backslide. The key, and the hard part, but easier and easier with time, is to keep my brain in the right headspace.
I love a good spreadsheet! I've created budget spreadsheets for multiple members of our family. Few things make me happier at the computer, lol!
